Nokia 9500 Communicator

 Nokia 9500 Communicator

The Nokia 9500 is the latest Communicator series phone, replacing the 9210i and packing in a rich feature set. Aimed at businesses and those people who demand powerful, flexible access to their data, contacts, email and the internet, the 9500 is clearly the most powerful mobile device of its type.

The 9500 is quite a large phone, weighing in at 222 grams and measuring 148x57x24 mm - making about 10% lighter and slightly more compact than it's predecessor.

At it's heart, the new Communicator is a tri-band GSM phone supporting GPRS and EDGE data, plus the novel inclusion of support for wireless 802.11b networks, turning the 9500 into a powerful mobile computer.

The big internal screen is 640 pixels by 200 pixels in 65,000 colours, and when combined with the built in web browser, email client or Microsoft Office compatible applications, plus the easy to use keyboard, then the Nokia 9500 can be seen to be a hugely practical device too.

Outside, the Communicator's looks have been improved over the slablike 9210i and there's a 128x128 pixel 65,000 colour display, better keypad and a VGA resolution digital camera.

Local connectivity is via Bluetooth, USB cable or infra-red, or alternatively via the built-in wireless ethernet.

The 9500 runs the powerful Symbian Series 80 operating system, and Nokia have worked with leading industry partners such as IBM, Symantec, Computer Associates and Cisco to help create applications for the new Communicator and ease integration into business environments. In addition, the 9500 integrates with industry standard messaging platforms.

Don't just think that this is a phone for business though - the Nokia 9500 supports all the standard internet protocols such as POP3, and the wide screen combined with the powerful Opera web browser makes it a practical platform for anyone who needs roaming access to the web or mail.

It comes with 80Mb shared memory as standard, and this can be expanded with MMC memory cards. The Nokia 9500 Communicator also plays MP3s and RealPlayer clips, can take still photos and short video clips with the camera and comes with polyphonic ringtones. You can customise the phone with optional Xpress-on covers.
