Nokia 5140

The Nokia 5140 is a ruggedised tri-band GSM camera phone aimed at those with active lifestyles, and it features several new innovations that haven't been seen in a Nokia handset before.

Firstly the basics - the Nokia 5140 is dust, bump and splash resistant, has an integrated FM radio, VGA resolution camera, and a built-in flashlight. This is pretty feature rich in itself, but the Nokia 5140 has even more.

Nokia are aiming the 5140 at people who enjoy exercise and outdoor activity, so the 5140 also comes with a built-in digital compass, thermometer, decibel meter, a stopwatch and interval timer, Fitness Coach application and an optional Active Headset.

However, the really novel feature of the Nokia 5140 is that it's the first GSM phone in the world to feature push-to-talk, which is a low-cost way of carrying out one-to-one or group calls, carrying voice data over the phone's built-in IP network via GPRS or EDGE data connectivity. Push-to-talk is done by a single button (there's also one included on the headset) and this turns the Nokia 5140 into something rather like a walkie-talkie.

Physically, the Nokia 5140 measures 107x47x24 mm (photo is approximate actual size on a 72dpi monitor) and weighs 101 grams. The display is 128x128 pixels in 4096 colours. Battery life is 2-5 hours depending on network with a standby time of 6-12 days.

The 5140's camera is a 640x480 resolution device, capable of recording video clips as well as photographs, supported by an image editor, gallery and of course the 5140 supports MMS multimedia messaging too.

Web browsing on the 5140 is done with the built-in XHTML browser over GPRS, EDGE or HSCSD data networks. There's a built-in Java-based email client.

The Nokia 5140 rounds these features off with Java applications, voice dialling, polyphonic ringtones, custom wallpapers and optional Xpress-on covers to customize the phone.
